Canon powershot g3-x,
maybe not so crazy after all….
Since I was a child, whenever I was given a chore to do, I always thought “There must be an easier way”. Easier way became my mantra, so when I go out for a day of photography, I only carry the very minimum of equipment. Hauling a heavy backpack with lenses is not my idea of a peasant hobby. That’s why I only ever carried my macro gear. But so often I would miss photo opportunities because at a crucial moment I’d have the wrong lens mounted. And slowly, as these frustrations grew, the joy of photography diminished a little. Perhaps that’s why the last “Photo Tips and Tricks” was dated October 2013.
Then, just over a year ago, I bought a Canon Powershot G3-X compact camera to have alongside the DSLR, sort of a backup camera. When I satarted playing with it, I quickly rediscovered the joy of photography. Thanks to a relatively large sensor, the image quality is remarkable, and at 20.2 megapixels, certainly enough to produce prints of 30 x 45 cm. (12 x 18 inches) at 300 dpi. And this with an astonishing zoom range of 24mm to 600mm, relative to a full-frame 35mm sensor.
If you are a professional photographer shooting stock images, you might need the latest DSLR. Some stock agencies require it, although Getty Images is now even accepting smart-phone photos. And if you think it’s important to be seen with the latest gear, or you like to brag about it, then of course you’re obligated to purchase the most expensive kit you can afford.
So, what will it be? The pure joy of photography, your own vision and craftsmanship, or impressing your friends with how heavy your camera bag is? For a print on the wall, images on your website, you really don’t need all that heavy equipment any longer. With the G3-x’s light weight and amazing zoom capabilities, you always have the proper lens at the ready.
Take the time to learn the ins and outs of this little gem, and your efforts will be richly rewarded. Below is a gallery of recent images, all taken with the Canon G3-X, showing it’s remarkable range, from wide angle to full telephoto, and telephoto with a closeup filter for the macro images. I’m sure you will agree that this is amazing little camera.
